civet is a mostly self-taught hobbyist painter and drawer. Born in 1984 in Brittany, France, were I still reside. The majority of my works consist of studies of paintings masters and various references found online combined together with a blend of imagination. I am most often seeking fun and absurdity while enjoying the pleasure of spreading colours!

Concept Description for "The Nightmare"

A woman lies asleep in a room, naked and powerless of what she is dreaming. The world of dreams is aggressive and abstract, but among the chaos we clearly see a human figure, male, a possible incubus (spirit sent to torment or suffocate sleeping innocents) is sitting next to her (or is he holding her?). One of his hands seems to want to touch the shoulder of the woman. A strong light illuminates the figure of the woman from the right, and the masculine figure turns to face the source of warmth. The sun is rising, the nightmare will soon end.

CIVET's works

A&Jlac

It is based on the union of two studies of famous paintings. The man on the left comes from The Ambassadors by Hans Holbein The Younger, while the lady on the right is none other than Mona Lisa in an imagined full lenght portrait including some fun elements.

The background is being inspired by those typical gradient backgrounds sometimes used by photographers to take studio portaits of people and famillies. This, along with their natural postures, helps to reinforce the impression that both characters are well acquainted, thus brings a certain sense of peace to the image.

Two animals can be also seen in the picture. A crocodile seem to enjoy the sight of the two friends posing and a perculiar bat deploys its wings in order perhaps to impress the viewer iy is directly looking at.

A difference of styles between the realistics characters and the roughly accopmlished animals helps to maintain a certain dynamic to this image in search of equilibrium.

Concept Description for "The Quill"

"Oh, nature’s noblest gift, my grey goose quill,

Slave of my thoughts, obedient to my will,

Torn from the parent bird to form a pen,

That mighty instrument of little men."

                                       - Lord Byron

CIVET's works

Goya's Diner

It is based on the study of Francesco Goya's Las Brujas en el Aire.

Here three demons are devouring a man alive while floating in the air.

On the ground, a fleeting being can be seen trying to sneak under the massacre unnoticed while hiding under an optical poncho.

Due to the power of the demons, the person is still losing some substance.

At the same time he tries to navigate his way between the cactus, whose thorns represents the ordeals of life and a donkey, which in some cultures represent the ideas of silliness and stubbornness.

The demons can be seen wearing hats. They are abstract representation of dunce hats which was used in the western world schools, mostly between the XVIIth and beginning of the XXth centuries, to shame pupils that were disrupting classes.

The painting illustrates how narrow and difficult the path to make a right choice can be.
